World O3: Alarms & Screens

Grafana dashboards and panels

You will learn: to build screens that answer "is the shop OK?" in one glance.

Checked with Prometheus 3 on 1 Nov 2026

The problem

The control room wall has 40 graphs. A customer phones: orders fail! Which screen helps you first?

Pick one answer.

Watch

This is one panel's query. Press Run and look at the graph.

Metrics in this data (tap to add):

Time 0 is when the data starts. The query looks back from the eval time.

A Grafana panel: One screen on the control room wall. Each panel runs one query and draws it: a line graph, a big number, a gauge or a table. is one screen on the wall. It runs one query and draws it.

Try it

Pick the right kind of panel for each question.

Drag a card into a box. Or tap the card, then tap the box.

        Try it

Write a Stat panel’s query: one number, all shop requests per second.

Type a PromQL query and press Run. The table shows the answer at the eval time. The graph shows it over time.

Metrics in this data (tap to add):

Time 0 is when the data starts. The query looks back from the eval time.

        Check

Tap the line that holds the panel's query.

        0 of 1 found

Grafana saves every dashboard as JSON. Keep that file in Git, like code.

        Predict

Top of the dashboard first. Put these in order. Use the arrows, or drag.

        • Which service hurts? One row per service
        • Is the shop OK? Errors, speed, traffic
        • Why? CPU, memory, disk

Order the rows of a good dashboard, top first.

        You did it!

You can now plan a dashboard that answers “is the shop OK?” first.

        Go deeper (optional)

Set a unit on each panel (percent, seconds, bytes), so 0.021 reads as 2.1%. Colour thresholds help, but add a word or an icon too. Try Grafana on your laptop, for free:

        Real mission

        1. docker run -d --name grafana-try -p 3000:3000 grafana/grafana:13.2.5
        2. docker rm -f grafana-try
